Small doctor steeping into our blood vessel

(Nora, Katrin, Samira) Scientists have built a robot, which is powered by a living heart muscle and is small enough to roam the human body.


James Friend has invented a new high-technology micro robot which can be injected in a blood vessel of a patient. This mini robot drifts like a submarine through the bloodstream and is equipped with a camera and sensors. It helps compile diagnoses and supports operations but could also perform an intervention on its own. The ingenious insertion of the active ingredient at the target location is one of the benefits of this new technology. The treatment leads to long lasting results with almost no side-effects.
The robot is made of biocompatible, elastic material. It has a rectangular body and six legs. By rubbing its legs against each other it creates friction which makes it move. Its speed averages one hundred micro metres per second, which means it covers a distance of fifty metres per week. A living heart muscle, which is fixed on the top of the robot, fulfills the same function our heart does, thus acting as the robot’s engine. Sugars, oxygen and other elements of our blood power this engine.
A dilemma which can arise, however, is that our immune system doesn’t accept this foreign element. One possibility to avoid this consequence is to implant stem-cells of the specific patient into the heart muscle of the robot. For this reason, every robot is unique and mass production is impossible.
This mini robot submits pictures from the inside of the blood vessel and is remote-controlled. A physician can guide it to any place in the patient’s body he desires, for example to the coronary vessel. The robot can be used to check whether the myocardial muscle is not supplied with enough blood or if a blood vessel is blocked. It can travel along the length of a blocked vessel and clears the blocked tubes or arteries.
If this project reaches its goals just once, it means an important step in medical science. Simple thromboses and other diseases of this kind could be diagnosed with a special liquid that is distributed by the robot. After the examination the robot goes back to its entering place and is taken out by an injection.
Also, other tests could be made with this helpful instrument: The existence of drugs, alcohol or special issues in our blood can easily be identified.
Scientists have planned to use this amazing robot in medicine. But more research and experiments have to be done, before any production or use of this new exploration starts. But one thing is for sure: The doctors will be able to help a great number of people all over the world with this special instrument. Many patients will be saved from fatal maladies, which means it will become possible to prevent heart diseases and apoplexies. In our opinion, this is a very remarkable concept in science, and will be a huge and positive change in today’s society.
